Dewsbury is getting a £157,000 double gas boost thanks to two gas pipe upgrade projects by Northern Gas Networks.
The area's gas pipeline owner is to replace a total of 1.3km of ageing metal gas pipes in Chickenley and the Boothroyd Lane area of Dewsbury with modern plastic mains, which are more durable.
The work is being carried out by engineers from Enterprise on behalf of Northern Gas Networks.
The project in Chickenley will see around 783m of old metal gas mains replaced with modern plastic pipe which is safer and more reliable. In the Boothroyd Lane area, just over 600m will be replaced in a move that will protect the integrity of the gas supply for decades to come.
Work got underway in Chickenley at the end of January and is expected to be complete by the end of February. The Boothroyd Lane area project is scheduled to start at the end of February and should be done by mid-March.
As the upgrades are being carried out on mainly residential roads they are not expected to affect commuters.
In Chickenley, new pipe is being laid on: Walnut Lane, Chickenley Lane and Ossett Lane. The newly laid main will be connected to the exisiting gas network via small excavations on Duke Street, Princess Road and Short Street.
In the Boothroyd Lane area: Boothroyd Lane, Staincliffe Close, Stockhill Street, and Westfield Grove will all benefit from the upgrade. Connections will be made via: Church Lane, Mitre Street, and Staincliffe Road.
Northern Gas Networks apologises for any inconvenience experienced by residents while this essential gas works is carried out. Northern Gas Networks’ Director Martin Alderson said:
"We will do everything we can to minimise disruption. This year, Northern Gas Networks will invest £63 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world. The good news is that we will be using modern technology to reduce the number of excavations we need to complete the work and our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of at least 80 years.”
