Gas Boost for Business

A new two mile pipeline is ensuring factories near Goole benefit from increased gas supplies this winter.

United Utilities runs the gas network in Yorkshire on behalf of Northern Gas Networks.

Northern Gas Networks invested over £540,000 in the new pipeline which runs under the B1230 between Howden and Gilberdyke.

It is needed to meet increased demand from the Scott Company fertilizer factory at Howden and Sandtoft Tiles at Broomfleet.

Work was completed in August and the new pipe is now fully operational. It has been a big success -working exactly as planned through the cold winter months.

Mick Parkinson, United Utilities network operations manager, said: "The scheme was quite complex in that the new pipe had to go under several culverts. There were also many other utility pipes in the area which we had to work around.

"Our engineers consulted in great detail with environmental experts to ensure that work was carried out as sensitively as possible to not impact on wildlife or the environment.

"We able to keep the B1230 open to traffic while work continued in order to minimise disruption

"United Utilities is delighted that the new pipe is operating exactly as we want it to and that these businesses now have increased gas supplies."

Northern Gas Networks took over the gas network in Yorkshire, Cumbria and the north east in June from Transco. United Utilities, one of the UK's leading multi-utility companies, is contracted to run the day to day operation.

The NGN area has a population of 6.7m of which 2.5m are gas customers. It has 36,000km of gas mains, enough to stretch from Howden to Sydney Australia and back again.
