The project to replace around 395m of ageing metal gas mains with modern plastic pipeline will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the area for decades to come. It is part of Northern Gas Networks annual £82 million investment in the region’s gas network.
Engineers from Morgan Sindall will carry out the work on behalf of the area’s gas pipeline owner. Work will be carried out on Northway and Victoria Road. It will be necessary to put some traffic restrictions in place in order to carry out the work safely.
The junction of Victoria Road and Hanover Road will be closed when engineers are working on this section of the job.
The easterly carriageway of Victoria Road will be closed between Aberdeen Walk and Northway for the duration of the works. Traffic heading into town will follow a diversion operating via Columbus Ravine, Dean Road and the Castle Road traffic lights.
Traffic wishing to access Victoria Road from Cambridge Street, Hoxton Road, Victoria Street and Vine Street will be restricted to a right turn only. Nelson Street is unaffected.
Road-users will also be restricted to a left turn only from Victoria Road into Barwick Street.
Access will be maintained where possible for residents and traders and at all times for emergency services.
Northern Gas Networks and Morgan Sindall would like to apologise for any inconvenience and will look to minimise disruption wherever possible while this essential work is completed.
Northern Gas Networks’ Director Chris Gorman said: “This work has been planned very carefully in conjunction with the council to ensure minimum disruption. Late September was identified as the optimum time to carry out the work – after the tourist season’s ended and before the winter sets in.
“We know this is a busy location and will do our utmost to get in and out as quickly and safely as possible.
“The good news is that the new plastic pipe is more durable and flexible and will last for generations so once we are done, we won’t need to come back for some time.
“This year, Northern Gas Networks will invest £63 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world."
