Gas improvements for Gosforth

Essential work to replace ageing gas mains has just started in Gosforth.

Northern Gas Networks and contractors Balfour Beatty have pledged to keep disruption to a minimum for motorists and commuters using Killingworth Road in South Gosforth .

The £61,000 investment is part of Northern Gas Networks’ annual £63 million commitment to upgrade the gas main network across the North East and Yorkshire.

The work to replace 610 metres of old gas mains started on 2 August and will last for nine weeks. As the work progresses, temporary two way traffic lights will be in operation near the roundabout at Killingworth Road and Benton Park Road.

Northern Gas Networks and Balfour Beatty apologise for any inconvenience experienced by residents, motorists and traders while these essential gas works are carried out. A customer liaison officer will visit the works regularly to discuss the improvements with residents and traders.

Northern Gas Networks’ Director Chris Gorman said: “This is a major gas main renewal project and will ensure that the safety and reliability of the gas network in Gosforth is greatly improved. We will do everything we can to minimise any disruption. The good news is that our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of at least 80 years.”

The roads affected by the gas mains replacement work will be: Killingworh Road, Benton Park Road, Freeman Road, Haddricks Mill Road and Church Road.
