Disruption Minimised During Marsh Gas Works

Road-users are being reassured that everything possible will be done to minimise disruption in the Westbourne Road area of Huddersfield as vital gas works are carried out.

Engineers from Enterprise have started work on a £37,000 investment project on behalf of the area’s gas pipeline owner.

Around 287m of old metal gas mains will be replaced with modern plastic pipe on Westbourne Road between its junctions with Abb Street and New Hey Road. It is expected to take around six weeks to complete.

The new plastic main will has an expected life-span of around 80 years and will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the area for decades to come.

Area operations manager Tony Thompson said access to the nearby Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, homes and businesses will be unaffected by the work: “This is a busy road and in view of that we are minimising disruption wherever possible.

“We hope to be able to complete the work without having to put traffic lights in place. The gas main that we need to work on is very close to the kerb edge so we are hopeful that this is possible,” he said.

Northern Gas Networks and Enterprise would like to apologise for any inconvenience and will continue to minimise disruption wherever possible while this essential work is completed.

Northern Gas Networks’ Director Chris Gorman said: “This year, Northern Gas Networks will invest £63 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world. The good news is that our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and will last for generations to come."
