Engineers from Morgan Sindall are due to start work on Monday (2 August) to replace 360m of ageing metal gas mains with modern plastic pipe.
Work will be carried out on Boroughbridge Road/Poppleton Road between the junction of Manor Drive North and Seldon Road.
Existing traffic lights will remain in place but it will be necessary to narrow the road to a single lane when engineers approach the junction with Manor Drive and Water End. Two-way traffic will be maintained and guided through the works by temporary road signs.
Area operations manager Richie Read said: “We know this is very busy part of town and have worked closely with York City Council highway’s department to ensure that the traffic management is designed to minimise disruption. This is why we have opted to leave the existing traffic lights in operation and guide traffic through narrowed lanes.”
The work is expected to take eight weeks to complete. Once in place, the new plastic main will have an expected life-span of around 80 years and will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to the area for decades to come.
Northern Gas Networks and Morgan Sindall would like to apologise for any inconvenience and will look to minimise disruption wherever possible while this essential work is completed.
Northern Gas Networks’ Director Chris Gorman said: “This year, Northern Gas Networks will invest £63 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world. The good news is that our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and will last for generations to come."
