Pipes and Politeness

Engineers working for United Utilities take care of their P's and Q's as well as the region's gas pipes.

United Utilities was awarded the contract to run Yorkshire's gas network on behalf of Northern Gas Networks in June.

Since then its gas engineers have received top marks not just for efficiency - but also for etiquette.

Residents have been charmed by engineers' manners during gas mains replacement schemes in Leeds, Pontefract and York.

At Bramley, Leeds, when United Utilities moved in to replace 200 meters of pipe, it was engineers' etiquette which proved a real gas. Resident Michael Meadowcroft wrote: "Appointments were kept to, work was completed on time and workmen were unfailingly polite, efficient and helpful."

At South Elmsall, Pontefract, United Utilities replaced gas mains at Beech Street and North Avenue. Residents Mr and Mrs Carlile, wrote: "The men were so joyful and helpful in every way. Nothing was too much trouble."

At Rawcliffe, York, engineers were praised for carrying out pipe replacement work in an "exemplary manner". Residents Lewis and Joan Kirby, wrote: "Engineers carried out the work with the utmost consideration and minimum of upset."

Dean Shepherdson, United Utilities network operations manager, said: "It's nice to receive letters from residents because it shows we are doing a good job and keeping disruption to a minimum. We always strive to complete gas mains work safely, efficiently and with a smile on our faces."
