Batley Pupils are Growing Green

Pupils from Batley Business and Enterprise College will be growing green this spring thanks to a little help from Northern Gas Networks.

The school beat off competition from across the region to win a £1,700 Northern Green Networks grant from the region’s gas pipeline company.

The money has already been put to good use in to purchase a new greenhouse which pupils are using to grow their own fruit and vegetables for use in the school.

Teacher Kevin Dooher explained: ”We have a group of pupils who spend a few hours every week doing horticultural training. The greenhouse is great as it means we can grow a much wider range of produce and the pupils learn a wider variety of skills.

“As well as using the produce in school, we also hope to sell some locally to help raise funds for the school.”

Presenting the winners trophy from Northern Gas Networks, Deborah Yewdall said: “Northern Green Networks was designed to support scale environmental projects and this is a great example. To give the pupils such hands-on practical training is tremendous.”
