Silden gas works near completion
The work is being carried out by United Utilities and Enterprise on behalf of pipeline owner Northern Gas Networks.
The majority of the work was completed in 2009 with engineers returning in early February to connect service pipes from individual properties to the new plastic main on Kirkgate and Howden Road.
Two-way traffic lights are in place on Kirkgate while this is being carried out, the lights are manned at peak times to help minimise disruption.
Engineers will work extended hours and through the weekend to further minimise disruption and expect to complete the work, barring any unforeseeable difficulties, by March 12.
Northern Gas Networks’ Gwen Evans said: “This is slightly longer than we first estimated and we would like to apologise for this. We needed to find a way to keep the gas pressure high enough to maintain supplies while we worked on it. We have now found a way to do this – ensuring that the gas supply will not be disrupted.”
A customer liaison officer will visit traders to explain what is happening and keep them well informed of progress.
United Utilities and Northern Gas Networks would like to say sorry for any inconvenience experienced during these works and thank residents and traders for their co-operation while this vital work is completed.
Area operations manager Tony Thompson said: “The good news for Silsden is that once this project is complete they will have a more reliable gas supply that’s guaranteed for decades to come.
“The people of Silsden have been extremely kind to us and really understand why we are here - ultimately it’s about protecting the long-term safety of their gas supply.
“We know that no-one likes to be faced with roadworks but the work is essential and we have done all that we can to help minimise disruption wherever possible.”
