Environmental Determinations

Certain gas pipeline works particularly in rural communities pose specific risk to the environment, habitats and wildlife.

Northern Gas Networks has a responsibility to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) following its procedures and to seek the appropriate authorisation from the Secretary of State prior to the commencement of any works.

The approval comes in the form of an authorisation by the Secretary of State following the request for an environmental determination.

The specific legislation for determinations is the Gas Transporters Pipe-Line Works (Environmental Assessment) Regulations 1999 although it should be noted that other legislation must be followed in the undertaking of works.
