Work is already underway to renew the gas mains on Broad Street, Fall Lane and Temple Road.
The work is being carried out by United Utilities and Enterprise on behalf of the region’s gas pipeline owner Northern Gas Networks and is expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete.
In total, 413km of old metal mains will be replaced with modern plastic pipe to ensure the safety and reliability of gas supplies in the area for decades to come.
Fall Lane will be closed from the junction of Broad Street to Brooks Yard with access maintained for residents. In addition, three-way traffic lights will be in operation at the junction of Huddersfield Road, Broad Street and Temple Street.
United Utilities apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists, businesses and residents while the work is underway.
A Customer Liaison Officer will make regular visits to the area to ensure that residents and businesses are kept informed of progress.
Northern Gas Networks’ Director Chris Gorman said: “We will do everything we can to minimise disruption. This year Northern Gas Networks will invest £82 million renewing gas mains to ensure that our system remains one of the safest in the world.
“The good news is that we will be using modern technology to reduce the number of excavations we need to complete the work and our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of at least 80 years.”
