The Bowes Railway Museum at Springwell Village near Gateshead allowed the gas workers from United Utilities to store their materials on site when the essential gas works took place in a nearby road. The team from United Utilities were working on behalf of Northern Gas Networks who own and operate the region’s gas supply network.
The Bowes Railway Company is a volunteer run charity and General Manager John Young was delighted with the donation of £100 from Northern Gas Networks which will be used to help with the day to day running costs of the museum.
The museum is full of locomotives and rolling stock mainly associated with the bygone age of coal mining together with an extensive collection of artefacts from the Springwell Colliery that once stood on the site. The original colliery buildings have now been restored, including the machinery and give a fascinating insight into the working lives of coal miners.
Chris Gorman, Network Operations Director at Northern Gas Networks was pleased to show his appreciation to the museum for the help his team received.
“This is a great museum and we are very grateful for all the help we had from John and his team of volunteers.”
