Climate Crew to the Rescue

Not even a heavy blizzard could stop the celebrations at Newminster Middle School in Morpeth when they collected their environmental grant from Northern Green Networks.

Youngsters from the school’s ‘Climate Crew’ group were awarded £700 to help transform an overgrown area of their school grounds into a wildlife garden.

Northern Green Networks is an environmental grant scheme run by Northern Gas Networks, the region’s gas pipeline company. This year, more than £60,000 has been awarded to community groups and schools across the region..

The grant will be used by the ‘Climate Crew’, an after school club set up to teach pupils about the environment and sustainable living. They will be creating a wildlife garden which will also be used as an outdoor classroom area.

Elaine Rough, Climate Crew organiser said: “The Climate Crew members have already been active in helping the school become more energy by switching off lights and appliances. Now they can get some hands-on experience by getting involved in developing and looking after the new wildlife garden.

“We also hope the garden will be enjoyed by members of the local community.”

Presenting the award, Dave Hutchison from Northern Gas Networks said: “It is great to see a group of youngsters so excited about getting involved in real environmental action. With such enthusiasm I’m sure the new wildlife garden is going to be a big success and we are delighted to be able to support them.”
