The strategic asset management model chosen by Northern Gas Networks to deliver services in the region is a major innovation in the gas distribution industry in Britain. The business model has the potential to deliver long-term strategic and operational benefits for the company and its stakeholders through incremental cost reduction, service improvements and growth opportunities.

The roles of asset management and associated services have been unbundled from the core business, Northern Gas Networks, into the experienced service provider United Utilities, through their subsidiary United Utilities Operations Limited.

This outsourcing arrangement provides defined targets against specific activites, such as asset performance and emergency service, and there are incentives for out-performance in each operational area.
