Northern Green Networks was launched last year and gave away grants totalling £50,000 to organisations and groups across northern England, ranging from Bradford to Berwick upon Tweed.
This year there is a total award fund of £60,000, with the maximum grant being £5,000.
And it couldn’t be simpler for groups to apply. All they need to do is fill in a short form telling the judges about the idea which they believe could improve the environment and make a difference to the lives of local people.
The judges are keen to make awards to as diverse a range of projects as possible. Ideas could include small scale environmental projects, a scheme to encourage local, voluntary participation in environmental activities and others to support local wildlife initiatives. Larger projects may be planting or restoring a local woodland or community green space or developing an environmental education scheme.
Northern Green Networks has been designed for communities across the North of England from the Scottish Border to the Humber in the East and Halifax in the West and plans to spread the grants around that area.
Director of Communications, John O’Grady, said the scheme is just one way for the Company to play a part in the communities where it works maintaining, replacing and extending the gas pipeline network.
“After safety, we place protecting the environment as one of our prime objectives and we are sure that we can help local organisations with small and large projects which won’t just protect that environment, but restore and improve it for the benefit of local people,” he said.
`“We hope that by doing that we can forge closer links with our communities, and build a better understanding or our role in delivering gas to homes and businesses across the North.”
