Gas Boost for Milnsbridge

Homes and businesses in the Milnsbridge area of Huddersfield are set to get a £150,000 boost to their gas supplies.

Residents and traders are being invited to an information session to find out more about the project being carried out in the Lipscombe Street and Market Street area of the town.

The major project is expected to take around 12-weeks to complete and will see more than 500 metres of old metal gas mains replaced with modern plastic pipeline. The work will ensure the safety and reliability of the gas supply in Milnsbridge for years to come.

During the project, it will be necessary to close a section of Market Street between Dale Street and Scar Lane to vehicles. Pedestrian access will be retained and special arrangements will be made to allow for deliveries to businesses in the affected area.

Residents and traders in the area will receive a letter this week inviting them to an information session being held at Milnsbridge Liberal Club in George Street between 5 – 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 2nd.

Representatives from United Utilities and Enterprise Ltd, who will be carrying out the project on behalf of Northern Gas Networks, will be there to answer queries about the works and also to show plans which illustrate the affected area.

Mark Chapman from United Utilities said the Market Street project is vital for the continued safety and reliability of gas supplies to homes and businesses in Milnsbridge.

He said: “We know no-one likes being faced with roadworks and the temporary closure for through traffic of a section of Market Street will inevitably cause some disruption. We will do everything we can to keep this to an absolute minimum. I would urge traders and residents in the area to come along to the information session and let us know about any special requirements they may have.

“Where possible, we will be using the very latest technology to help minimise the amount of digging we need to do in the road and keep the duration of the project as short as possible.”

The first phase of the work will be carried out in Lipscombe Street and Scar Lane. This will start on July 7th and last for approximately two weeks, it will be necessary to have temporary traffic lights in place on Scar Lane.

Work will then move into Market Street on July 21st. This phase will involve the closure of Market Street between the junctions of Scar Lane and Dale Street and is expected to take six weeks to complete.

The final phase of the works will be carried out around the junction with George Street.

This year Northern Gas Networks will invest more than £4 million in the Kirklees area to replace around 40km of old metal gas mains.
