Cawood School's Green Award

Cawood Primary School has received a £3,000 award to help it develop its green credentials.

The award was from Northern Green Networks, the environmental sponsorship scheme run by Northern Gas Networks.

The cash will pay for a new greenhouse, the development of a bog garden and the creation of a wildlife meadow.

John Grogan MP made the award to the school head, Andrew Smith, watched by members of the school's young gardeners group. The project aims to raise the awareness of sustainable development within the school, encouraging the children to act as ambassadors in caring for the environment.

Mr Grogan praised the gas pipeline company for investing in grassroots environmental projects. "This is really super and will help the school a great deal," he said.

The school is one of 15 groups and organisations to share £50,000 from the awards scheme for 2007.

John O'Grady of Northern Gas Networks said the school's plans made it an ideal candidate for a Northern Green Networks award. "We are really pleased to be able to help the school in this way and wish them every success in their environmental objectives."

The school is the last of the 15 winners from last year's awards scheme to receive its allocation.Details of the Northern Green Networks scheme for 2008 will be announced soon.
