Guisborough's £295,000 Gas Mains Boost

APRIL 16, 2008

Homes and businesses in Guisborough are set for a £295,000 boost to their gas supplies.

This month, gas engineers start two major projects to replace three kilometres of old metal gas main in the town with modern plastic pipe.

The work is being carried out by United Utilities on behalf of the region’s gas pipeline owner Northern Gas Networks and is essential for the safety and reliability of local gas supplies.

Engineers have already started a three and a half month project to replace 2.25km of main in nine streets around Hereford Road. Next week they will begin replacing a further 700 metres of gas main in five streets around Woodhouse Road. This will take about five weeks.

Northern Gas Networks owns all the gas mains in the North East, northern Cumbria and east, west and north Yorkshire and, together with its operating partner United Utilities, runs the region’s gas emergency service.

Network Director Chris Gorman said everything possible would be done to keep the inconvenience of the work to a minimum.

“The good news is that our new plastic pipes are durable and flexible and once in the ground will have a lifespan of at least 80 years,” he said.

Northern Gas Networks spends more than £60m a year renewing gas mains to make sure its system remains one of the safest in the world. This year alone almost 530km of its 36,000km network will be made of brand new pipe.
