Gas engineers have issued a half term safety message to youngsters across the region: “Don’t play near road works.”

Pipeline firm Northern Gas Networks will renew hundreds of vital gas pipes over the school half-term holidays, when the roads are not so busy.

And engineers want to make sure children don’t use sites as playgrounds.

Peter Christie, safety boss for United Utilities, which will carry out the work on Northern Gas Networks’ behalf, said it was vital children kept well away from any construction site.

“Playing near road works is especially dangerous because traffic is involved. We take safety very seriously and make sure all our sites are as safe as they can be for both the public and our engineers. That’s why it’s very dangerous to move any site equipment like signs or barriers.

“We want everyone to enjoy their half term holidays and stay safe and healthy. Remember that our sites are not playgrounds and they’ll stay safe places for everyone,” he said.
