What We Are Doing
Northern Gas Networks owns the gas mains system across the North of England. We need to keep the mains, and other equipment, in good condition to ensure you and your neighbours always have access to a gas supply.
We are gradually replacing the metal gas mains with new plastic pipes. These are the yellow pipes you may see around the area from time to time. They are made from a strong and flexible material, polyethylene.
We need to replace the metal pipes now, free of charge to you, to keep the system operating safely and without interruption.
Our work may cause you some inconvenience. But we hope to work closely with you and your neighbours so the inconvenience is minimised. For example, we try and insert the new plastic pipes inside the old metal pipes. That means we do not have to dig long trenches down the roadway. Sometimes this is not possible but we will try and find other ways to minimise any disruption.
The work we are planning is for your safety. Our contractors will advise you when we need to work on your property to connect your home or business to the new gas main outside.
Your gas supply will probably be interrupted for a short while but the engineers will work closely with you to keep this interruption as short as possible.
Our engineers need to be told if you have any special needs. They will co-operate closely with you to meet your requirements.
