Plummeting temperatures are sending the region's householders scurrying to turn up their heating. But what would they do if they smelled gas?
Northern Gas Networks is urging householders to get gas safety all wrapped up this winter.
Around three times as much gas flows through the region’s 36,000km of mains in November as it does in summer.
Emergency manager for Northern Gas Networks’ operating company United Utilities, Peter Christie, said anyone who smelled gas should call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999*.
“Safety is our number one priority and the beginning of winter is a good time to remind people what to do if they smell gas.
“Our emergency engineers will respond to suspected gas leaks at any time of the day or night, whether it’s inside or out. Our service is completely free and we will always make they situation safe. Don’t leave it to someone else to call.”
The gas emergency service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and will continue to operate over Christmas and New Year.
To keep you and your family safe remember the following vital safety steps if you smell gas:
• Do not smoke or light matches
• Do not turn electrical switches on or off
• Do open door and windows
• Turn off the meter at the control valve (unless the smell of gas and the meter are in the cellar, as often this will require a light being turned on)
• Call the 24-hour freephone gas emergency service on 0800 111 999, whether the smell is inside or outside the property.
