Brighouse pupils get the gas safety message

Gas workers went back to school to give Brighouse youngsters a vital lesson in gas safety.

Pupils at St Chad’s Church of England School in Upper Green Lane, Hove Edge received a visit from Northern Gas Network’s ‘Crucial Crew’.

Engineers from United Utilities, who manage the network of behalf of Northern Gas Networks, spent two days at St Chad’s teaching children everything from what to do if they smell gas and how to make a call to the gas emergency helpline through to how to stay safe when gas engineers are working in the street.

United Utilities customer liaison offer Danny Press said: “Crucial Crew teaches children all about gas safety. We give them scratch and sniff cards so they know what gas smells like and let them practice making a call to the gas emergency Service. We also teach them about the importance of having their gas appliances checked every year so that is hopefully something they will go home and remind their parents about!

“As we have got a programme of gas mains replacement throughout Yorkshire we also wanted to remind youngsters about the importance of staying safe near our works.”

Headteacher at St Chad’s, Mr Graeme Genty added: “It was a really fun and informative lesson for the children and they have all come away knowing what to do if they smell a gas leak and are a great deal wiser now in how to keep themselves and their families safe in and around the home. I thought this was particularly relevant with all of the gas works that are taking place around the local community at the moment and the two gentleman who delivered the sessions were excellent with the children. Thank you.”
