Northern Gas Networks will carry out essential gas mains improvement work in the Harlow Park Road area of Harrogate starting on January 22.
Some of the gas mains in the area are more than 50-years-old and need to be replaced with brand new plastic pipe.
Around 800m of pipe needs to be replaced and the scheme will run through the spring and into summer.
The work will take place in three stages:
• Harlow Avenue from Jan 22 for around three weeks (traffic lights in operation).
• Harlow Park Road from Feb 5 for around six weeks. The road will need to be closed to through traffic but access will be maintained to residents.
• Pannal Ash Road (dates to be determined).
Mark Chapman, United Utilities engineering and design manager, said: “The gas pipes in this area date to the 1950s and need to be replaced. We monitor the condition of our gas pipes constantly and this scheme is essential to maintain the safety and reliability of the network in this area.
“Unfortunately with any major scheme of this nature there is going to be some inconvenience to residents but we will work very hard to keep disruption to a minimum.
“We are looking at this scheme going on into the early summer. But once the new gas pipes are in place they will last around 80 years.”
We are working closely with highways officials from Harrogate Council throughout the duration of the scheme.
Letters have gone to residents to keep them posted and there will be regular updates in the media as the work progresses.
