Gas Boost for Brighouse

Essential gas mains improvement work will commence in Halifax Road, Brighouse on January 22.

Some of the gas mains in the area are more than 80-years-old and need to be replaced with brand new plastic pipe.  £150,000 is being in the scheme.

Around 1km of pipe needs to be replaced and the scheme will take around two months. Halifax Road will be kept open but traffic will only be allowed to travel one-way for the duration of the project (towards Brighouse). A clearly signed diversion route will also be in operation.

Engineers will work seven days a week to get the job completed as quickly as possible.

The work in Halifax Road will take place in two stages:

• Garden Road to Waterloo Road, from Jan 22 for around four weeks
• Waterloo Road to Elland Road from Feb 19 for around four weeks.

Mark Chapman, United Utilities engineering and design manager, said: “The gas pipes in this area date to the 1920s and need to be replaced. We monitor the condition of our gas pipes constantly and this scheme is essential to maintain the safety and reliability of the network in this area.

"Unfortunately with any major scheme of this nature there is going to be some inconvenience to residents, motorists and traders, but we will work very hard to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We are looking at around eight weeks of disruption but the new gas pipes will last around 80 years.”

Pipes will also be replaced in Brighouse Wood Lane, Rydings Avenue, and Sunny Bank Road. Access will be maintained for residents and traders at all times.

United Utilities is working closely with highways officials from Calderdale Council and the emergency services throughout the duration of the scheme.

Certain bus services may be diverted while work gets underway and people can get more information from Metroline on 0113 245 7676.
