Explosion in North Shields

Engineers investigating the explosion in Grey Street, North Shields, earlier today have completed their safety checks on the gas network in the area.

All mains in Grey Street, and the individual service pipes connecting a home to the main, are working normally. There are no leaks and the situation is perfectly safe. There had been no gas emergency calls made prior to the explosion at around 7.30am.

The Health & Safety Executive is responsible for investigating the incident further, and Northern Gas Networks will support them in any way it can.

A spokesman for Northern Gas Networks said the company’s thoughts were with the families of those who had been involved in the incident.
