Explosion in North Shields

One person has been killed and several injured in an explosion in Grey Street, North Shields.
Engineers working on behalf of Northern Gas Networks were called to a report of an explosion at 44, Grey Street, North Shields, which happened at around 7.30am this morning, Wednesday, 10th May.

Engineers are now working with the Health & Safety Executive to try and determine the cause of the explosion.

A number of surrounding properties were evacuated by the emergency services and it is hoped that residents can return to their homes later today.
There is no effect on gas supplies.
