Explosion in North Shields

Engineers working on behalf of Northern Gas Networks were called to a report of an explosion at 44, Grey Street, North Shields, which happened at around 7.30am this morning, Wednesday, 10th May.

Engineers are working with the emergency services to ensure the area is safe.

It is still too early to say whether the explosion is gas-related.

As a precautionary measure a number of homes have been evacuated by the fire brigade in Grey Street, Whitby Street and part of Tynemouth Road.

There is no effect on gas supplies.
