A £98,000 project to replace ageing metal gas mains in Westgate, Cleckheaton will reach completion two weeks ahead of schedule on 16th August.

The major upgrade involved replacing the towns existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes which will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project which commenced in June 2013 was expected to take 12 weeks to complete.

Stuart Armin, Northern Gas Networks’ Interim Customer Operations Area Manager for Pennines said; “We are pleased that we are on track to complete the project two weeks ahead of schedule.

“It has been a great team effort by everyone involved in the project including Kirklees Council and Arriva, who worked closely with Northern Gas Networks’ Major Projects team and contractors Amey Ltd to minimise disruption.”

Stuart added: “We would like to thank business owners, residents and members of the public for the patience and understanding they have shown throughout.”

Northern Gas Networks will continue their investment in Cleckheaton’s gas mains network, carrying out essential mains replacement work in Bradford Road and Dewsbury Road next month.

The Bradford Road project will be carried out in two phases over a ten week period. The first phase will commence from Monday, 19th August from the junction with St Peg Lane to the junction of Neville Street and is expected to last for approximately 4-5 weeks. During this time, temporary four way traffic lights will be in place at the junction of Bradford Road with St Peg Lane.

The second phase of the replacement work will be carried out on Bradford Road at the junction with Neville Street to the junction of Manor Park Road and will take an estimated 5 weeks to complete.

Stuart Armin said: “We have worked closely with Kirklees Council Highways Department to determine the best time to commence our replacement works in Bradford Road. The work has been scheduled for August/September so it takes place before the council resurface the road later in the year.”

“The work has also been timed to coincide with the suspension of the M62 roadworks near junction 26, helping to ease the flow of traffic in the area.”
