Important information: Potential delay to your meter installation

Between 19 May and 6 June, it may take longer than usual to arrange the meter installation with your gas supplier. This is because of an Ofgem initiative to replace the IT systems used across the UK gas market. It involves all gas suppliers and will ultimately make it easier for you to switch supplier and/or get a smart meter. You can find more information about Project Nexus on Ofgem’s website.

£70k upgrade to Barnsley gas distribution network

The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £70,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in Wakefield Road, Mapplewell, Barnsley.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and involves replacing around 370m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, ensuring the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which will start on Monday 11 July and last approximately five weeks, has been planned in conjunction with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

The scheme will take place in three phases, the first of which will begin on Monday 11 July at the rear of properties 389 – 407 Wakefield Road. The works will last approximately three weeks and will not require any traffic management.

Phase Two will start on Monday 1 August, and last around one week, requiring some traffic management controls.  The existing three-way traffic light system at Wakefield Road and Bar Lane will be temporarily suspended, and a temporary three-way traffic light system introduced.

This will be manually operated between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week.  The filter lane from Wakefield Road to Bar Lane will be closed and a diversion route put in place, clearly signposted for motorists.

Phase Three will commence on Monday 8 August and also last one week. The filter lane from Wakefield to Bar Lane will be reopened and the existing temporary traffic lights will remain in place, however these will be monitored as the project progresses.

If safe to do so temporary traffic lights will be removed and replaced with stop/go boards which will be used when heavy vehicles are required on site.

Engineers will work Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday 14 June between 4pm and 6pm at the Eastfield Arms Pub on Wakefield Road in Mapplewell.  Members of the public are invited to drop in to find out more about the works, meet the team and ask any questions that they may have.

Paul Gordon, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to carefully plan these works in order to minimise disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank customers for their patience and support in getting the project completed as quickly as possible.”
