Major investment in Elland gas distribution network

Northern Gas Networks is investing £75,000 to upgrade ageing metal gas mains in the Dewsbury Road / Elland Riorges Link / Huddersfield Road area of Elland.

The upgrade will involve replacing half a kilometre of gas mains with more durable plastic pipes which will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The essential gas mains replacement work will be carried out in three phases commencing on Monday, 2 September in Dewsbury Road near the junction with Westbury Street. The project will progress in a southerly direction, reaching completion at the junction of Huddersfield Road with South Lane. It is expected to take four weeks in total to complete.

The first phase of the work will take approximately one week to complete (2 – 8 September). In order to carry out this phase of the project safely and efficiently it will be necessary to suspend the exit from the roundabout (Co op) into Dewsbury Road. Throughout this phase of the works, three-way manually operated temporary traffic lights will be in place at the junction of Dewsbury Road with Westbury Street and Ellen Riorges Link to help manage the flow of traffic in the area.
The second phase of the project (9 – 15 September) will continue between Dewsbury Road and Huddersfield Road. Traffic will be filtered into one lane between Dewsbury Road and the roundabout during this phase of the work.During phase three of the project (16

– 22 September), it will be necessary to suspend parking outside the shops on Huddersfield Road between the junctions with James Street and South Lane. Three-way manually operated temporary traffic lights will also be erected to manage the flow of traffic in the area.
Andrew Lambert, Construction Manager working for Amey on behalf of Northern Gas Networks, said: “We are working hard to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and motorists, however some traffic build up should be expected in the area during peak times.

“In advance of the work taking place, a letter is being sent to residents, businesses and stakeholders. Our Customer Liaison team is also door-knocking residents and businesses in the area to help ensure they are aware of the work.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause, and thank everyone for their patience and understanding.”
