Work is due to start on a major project to replace Corbridge’s old iron gas mains with modern, more durable plastic pipes which will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to hundred’s of customers in the town.

The work, which will take place on Middle Street, includes replacing 0.5km of pipe and represents an investment of £48,000.

Work is expected to start week commencing 13th January and will take two weeks to complete.

Paul Common, Northern Gas Networks Customer Operations Area Manager for North Yorkshire, said: “Unfortunately the gas mains in this area have reached the end of their useful life and the new plastic pipes that we will be putting in are more durable and will serve the area well for decades to come.

“We’ve been working closely with the council to minimise traffic congestion during this essential work, however there will be a road closure on Middle Street and a diversion will be in place. Access to the Market Place will be via Front Street and we apologise for any disruption this may cause. ”

Northern Gas Networks will be holding a community forum at Room 1, Corbridge Parish Hall on 4th December between 5.00pm and 7.30pm.

Anyone that smells gas should ring the national gas emergency service, anytime, day or night on 0800 111 999.
