The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £105k to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in and around Greenroyd Avenue, Halifax.

The essential major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in Halifax and the surrounding area and will involve replacing around 811m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers for years to come.

The project will begin on Monday 24 July and is expected to last around seven-weeks, with an estimated completion date of Wednesday 6 September. All works have been closely agreed with Calderdale Council to ensure that disruption is kept to minimum.

Works will begin on Skircoat Green Road near to the junction of Stafford Road and will progress along towards the four-way junction of Dryclough Lane, before continuing on to the junction of St Bevans Road.

In order to carry out the work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce a number of traffic management measures throughout the project.

From Monday 24 July until Sunday 30 July, there will be two-way temporary traffic signals on Skircoat Green Road between Stafford Road and Dryclough Green. On Monday 31 July, these lights will then change to four-way temporary lights to enable NGN to complete the works at the junction of Drycough Road, and will remain in place until Sunday 13 August. As NGN move away from the junction the lights will then be reduced back down to two-way signals from Monday 14 August for the remainder of the scheme.

All traffic signals will be manually operated between the hours of 7am and 9am and 3pm and 6pm Monday to Friday.

Due to the traffic management measures, there are expected delays to existing bus timetables. Bus companies have been made aware of the works to try and cause as little disruption to service as possible.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local businesses and residents to update them on progress and provide details of the traffic management plans.

Engineers will be working from Monday to Saturday between 8am and 4.30pm and NGN will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

Paul Jagger, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Calderdale Council to carefully plan these works to minimise any disruption to customers.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”
