The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is supporting Barwick-In-Elmet Church of England Primary School by donating £1000 to help them expand their library.

NGN has been carrying out essential work in the area to upgrade ageing metal pipes with more durable plastic ones.

The work started on Monday 17 April and is expected to last around 43 weeks with 8km of pipes being replaced as part of the £600,000 project.

Barwick in Elmet C of E Primary School, Leeds, presented with £1,000 by NGN.

The works were registered as a Considerate Constructor Scheme site, and as part of the Scheme’s pledges, NGN’s Customer Care team visited local schools and charities to explore ways of making a difference to the lives of people living where engineers are working.

The school has been raising money by holding ‘Run to Read’ events which engage both children and adults and include the Leeds Mini – a 1.5k race for 3 – 8 year olds, a 2.5k junior run for 9-14 year olds as well as the 10K Jane Tomlinson’s Run for All.

Fiona Evans, English Lead at the school said: “We are hoping to develop and expand our existing library, making it more accessible for KS1 and Early Years children by creating a dedicated space, book trees, seating area and picture book shelving.”

‘’We would like to thank NGN for their £1000 donation to help us reach our target of £5,500 and enable us to get our new library ready for September.’’

Katherine Lee, Customer Care Officer at Northern Gas Networks said: “At Northern Gas Networks we are committed to supporting the communities where we work. We hope the contribution will help more children to get excited about reading and benefit the pupils of Barwick-In-Elmet Church of England Primary School long after we are gone.’’

Anyone that smells gas or suspects Carbon Monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This line is in operation 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
