The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), threw its support behind junior football in Leeds last weekend, sponsoring Wigton Moor Football Club’s annual football gala.

NGN is currently investing £300K to upgrade ageing metal gas mains with new, more durable plastic pipes on Alwoodley Lane, Leeds.

The essential works, which will be completed in August 2017, are registered as a Considerate Constructors Scheme project. As part of the Scheme’s pledges, NGN’s Customer Care Officers explore ways to support local communities in which work is taking place.

Customer Care officers visited Wigton Moor FC to learn how NGN could help make a difference to the community while work continues.

The gala, which was held on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June, is one of Yorkshire’s biggest youth football tournaments and attracts around 3,000 children and their families from around the county.

The money raised through the gala is reinvested into the club, which runs 29 teams for boys and girls aged 6 to 19.

Matthew Davenport, Head Gala Organiser for the club, said: “As you can imagine, the on-going costs of running this club are really high and most years we struggle to make ends meet. So, the money we raise from the gala is vital as this is the biggest single fundraiser for us.”

‘’Support from local businesses is crucial to enable us to continue to give young people the opportunity to play football so we’d like to thank NGN for sponsoring the day.’’

Katherine Lee, Customer Care officer at NGN said: “It’s lovely to support a great football club that does so much for children in the community our works are taking place in”
