The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing over £110,000 to upgrade ageing metal gas mains at Norwood, Beverley.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing investment in the area’s gas infrastructure and will involve replacing over 250 metres of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in Beverley for years to come.

The eight-week project, which began on Tuesday 18 April 2017, has been carefully planned in conjunction with East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Due to the location of the gas main and in order to carry out the works safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to introduce a single lane closure on Norwood from Tuesday 30 May for approximately two weeks. In addition, parking bays will be suspended between no. 48 and 80 Norwood.

It’s expected these works may cause some delays to journey times, so motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel during the lane closure. NGN will endeavour to complete these works as soon as possible, and will provide updates on progress throughout the project.

Shops and businesses in the area will remain open as usual.

NGN’s Customer Care Officers have been door-knocking local homes and businesses to make customers aware of the project, while on-site signage will advise motorists of the work taking place.

The Norwood project has been registered as a Considerate Constructors Scheme site, following key principles to ensure minimal impact on the environment, customers and the community while observing the highest standards of safety.

A customer cabin open every Tuesday between 9.30am and 11am is now located on Norwood, where NGN’s team is on hand to answer any customer questions about the work as it progresses. NGN’s team will also be collecting food for the local food bank and customers wishing to donate food to the food bank are welcome to drop in at the cabin.

As well as discussing the works, NGN’s team offer free advice on Carbon Monoxide (CO) awareness.  Vouchers enabling customers to receive a 10% discount on any CO detectors purchased at Wickes in Beverley can be collected from the cabin every Tuesday.

During the project, NGN will be supporting local charity FIND2, a service designed to meet the needs of young adults with learning difficulties. NGN’s Customer Care Officers will be supporting the charity with fundraising activities throughout the next eight weeks.

Robert Hope, Construction Services Area Manager for Northern Gas Networks said: “At NGN we fully appreciate the impact our works can have on customers, and would like to thank the local businesses and residents for their patience and understanding.

“We have worked closely with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise disruption to customers. We will endeavour to complete the project as quickly and safely as possible and keep customers updated as the work progresses.

“We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused during these works and thank everyone for their patience and support while we carry out this essential upgrade.”
