Mark Horsley, Chief Executive Officer
Mark Horsley has been Chief Executive Officer of Northern Gas Networks (NGN) since 2011. He has over 40 years of experience in the energy sector. In the five years since joining NGN the company has transformed its approach to customer service securing twelve national accolades for customer and employee experience including a National Business Award for ‘Customer Focus’.
Mark was awarded ‘Inspirational Leader’ at the UK Employee Experience Awards in March 2015 in recognition of his innovative approach to employee engagement which has been instrumental to NGNs cultural transformation.
Mark has held a number of senior appointments in the industry including Equity Partner and Head of Power Distribution at EC Harris, an international built asset consultancy, Strategy and Central Programmes Director at Scottish Power and President and Chief Operating Officer at CE Electric UK. Mark held the post of Chairman of the UK Energy Networks Association from 2004 to 2006, and was appointed Chairman of the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) in 2014.
Howard Forster, Customer Operations Director
Howard took up the role of Customer Operations Director in April 2011. He has more than 25 years’ experience in construction related industries and was previously a Partner at EC Harris, an international built asset consultancy.
Howard’s experience includes operational management, planning, project and change management roles across sectors, including healthcare and utility industries.
David Waite, Finance Director
David was appointed to the role of Finance Director in December 2012, having previously headed up Corporate Services since joining the company in January 2006. David is a Chartered Accountant and has around 20 years’ experience in the energy industry.
David joined the company from National Grid and prior to that he was a Director at Deloitte and also Head of Taxation at Yorkshire Electricity. David trained in the accountancy profession in Yorkshire before working for several multi-nationals including The BOC Group in London before returning back to the North.
Susan Wareham, Human Resources Director
Susan Wareham joined Northern Gas Networks in August 2005. She has over 30 years’ experience working in Human Resources, predominantly in the utilities sector. Susan is committed to employee engagement and encourages a culture of fairness and equality.
Having left school with few academic badges, Susan has studied and progressed through her career, and attributes her success to a strong work ethic demonstrated by her parents.
David Gill, Director of Stakeholder Relations
David Gill joined Northern Gas Networks in April 2012. He has over 35 years’ experience in the energy industry, previously Head of Customer Service at Northern Powergrid. David’s experience includes operational management, project and change management. David is responsible for maintaining senior level relationships with government and stakeholders.
Mike Ashworth, Legal Director & Company Secretary
Mike Ashworth is a Solicitor and holds a Degree in Law (LLB Hons) together with other postgraduate qualifications. Mike has worked in the utilities sector since the mid 1980s and has held a number of positions including Deputy General Counsel of Transco plc and UK Deputy General Counsel of National Grid plc. He joined Northern Gas Networks as Legal Director & Company Secretary in 2005.
Stephen Parker, Regulation Director
Stephen Parker joined Northern Gas Networks when it was set up in 2005. He has over 30 years’ experience in the energy industry and previously worked in senior regulatory and procurement roles at United Utilities, Npower and Yorkshire Electricity.
Martin Alderson, Asset Risk Management and Safety Director
Martin Alderson is a qualified engineer and has worked in the gas distribution industry for more than 35 years, working his way up through various engineering positions. He has also held a number of senior management positions within operations and asset management.
Martin is a member of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) and sits on both their technical committee and technical working groups. He has a wide range of experience in all aspects of gas transmission, distribution and storage activities including Safety Management Systems.
Nick Phillips, Head of Investment Planning
Nick has worked with NGN since January 2011, when he quantified the cost saving and efficiency opportunities for the company following acquisition of United Utilities Operations. Nick also led the plan to transform the customer experience in our gas connections business in Jan 2012. He joined the NGN team in January 2013 in a business improvement role, and is now responsible for leading Investment Planning and Asset Integrity.
Nick has previously worked with a range of utility, commercial development and public sector organisations, helping them to improve their operating models and asset strategies.
Donna Davies, Head of Colleague Development
Donna joined NGN in April 2013 and worked in a number of different business areas before taking up her current role as Head of Colleague Development.
Donna has a particular interest in colleague engagement and development, and is passionate about encouraging and enabling colleagues to help shape the future of their business and create a ‘smarter NGN’.
Gareth Mills, Head of Asset Strategy
Gareth joined Northern Gas Networks in August 2005. He has over 20 years’ experience in the Energy and Utilities industry in the UK.
Gareth began his career as an economic adviser to the UK government on energy related issues before progressing through senior regulatory and commercial roles at National Grid, Yorkshire Water and British Nuclear Fuels. Gareth has a BA (Hons) Economics and MSc Energy Economics from the University of Surrey.
Eileen Brown, Customer Experience Director
Eileen was appointed to the position of Head of Customer Experience in 2011, following 10 years in the gas industry working across both operational and corporate functions and became Customer Experience Director in 2016.
Eileen is passionate about helping NGN deliver a world class experience for all customers, centered on understanding the individual needs of each and every customer and ensuring every interaction adds value.
Matthew Little, Director of Innovation, Improvement and Information
Matthew Little joined Northern Gas Networks in 2007, working in the IT team as a Project Manager and was appointed to the Senior Management Team in 2015 as Head of 3iG (Innovation, Improvement and Information Group). He became Director of Innovation, Improvement and Information in 2016. In this role Matthew is responsible for the operation and support of NGN’s IT systems and for the delivery of innovation and improvements using accelerated delivery techniques, such as Agile, Lean and Kanban.
Matthew graduated from Lancaster University with a History Degree and prior to joining Northern Gas Networks worked for the Department of Work and Pensions as a Business Analyst.
Roger began his career as an apprentice mains layer for British Gas. During his time at British Gas he qualified as a chartered gas engineer and more recently worked for Scottish Power as the Managing Director of the company’s commercial connections business.
Roger was appointed to the position of Commercial Director in 2015 where he heads up the Commercial Services division which includes NGN’s commercial, procurement and purchase to pay teams. Roger is responsible for ensuring that every investment decision delivers maximum benefits for NGN and its customers.
