The north of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £190,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in Woodhouse Lane, Albion Street, Merrion Street and St Anne’s Street, Leeds.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure in the area and will involve replacing 440m of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes, to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

The project, which will begin on Monday 8 August and last approximately 10 weeks has been planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council to ensure all works are completed with as little disruption as possible.

Works will be completed in the following eight phases.

Phase One begins on Monday 8 August on Albion Street and Great George Street. During the works on Great George Street, there will be a lane closure in place at the junction of Albion Street for approximately two weeks.

Phase Two will commence on Monday 15 August at the junction of Woodhouse Lane and Merrion Street and last around two weeks.  During this phase there will be a lane closure on Woodhouse Lane and Merrion Street.

Phase Three will commence on Monday 22 August on St Anne’s Street and last approximately two weeks.  These works will take place on the pedestrianised section between Dudley Way and Albion Street.

Phase Four will start on Monday 29 August on Woodhouse Lane outside the Merrion Centre and will last around one week.  Existing footway widths will be reduced, however alternative walkways will be provided if necessary.

Phase Five will commence on Monday 5 September on St Anne’s Street and will last one week.  During this phase there will be a full road closure on St Anne’s Street.  Access to The Light car park from Great George Street will be maintained, however there will be no access to Cookridge Street via St Anne’s Street.

Phase Six will commence on Monday 12 September on Albion Street and Great George Street and will last around four weeks. During this period there will be no access to Woodhouse Lane from Great George Street. There will be diversion routes provided which will be clearly signed and displayed for all motorists and a contraflow in place at this time from Albion Street to Woodhouse Lane.

Phase Seven will begin on Monday 3 October and will continue on Woodhouse Lane and at the junction of Great George Street lasting approximately one week. There will be a lane closure on the inbound carriageway from Woodhouse Lane to Merrion Street.

Phase Eight will start on Monday 10 October on Woodhouse Lane outside Morrisons.  There will be a lane closure in place during this part of the project.

Please note that due to the complexity and nature of these works, durations and timescales may vary, however NGN will make every effort to adhere to the dates provided in the information above.

Meetings have been held with public transport companies to make them aware of all proposed works and they will be kept informed throughout.

Although works will take place on pedestrian walkways, access will maintained at all times. Engineers will be working Monday to Saturday between 8am and 5pm, and Sundays as and when required.

Russ Oxley, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan the majority of these works during the school holidays in order to minimise any disruption to customers

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these works, and thank our customers for their patience and support in getting them completed as quickly as possible.”
