The North of England’s gas distributer, Northern Gas Networks (NGN), is investing £90,000 to upgrade the ageing metal gas mains in Cardigan Road, Headingley, Leeds.
This major project is part of NGNs’ ongoing replacement of infrastructure in the region and will involve replacing 600 metres of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.
The project, which will commence on Monday 27 July and take approximately 6 weeks to complete, has been carefully planned in conjunction with Leeds City Council so that it is carried out during the quieter school period.
Russ Oxley, Construction Services Area Manager Northern Gas Networks said: “We have been working closely with Leeds City Council to carefully plan these works and will be doing all we can to minimise any disruption caused.”
The project has been planned in four phases with the first phase due to finish in early-August, the second phase in mid-August, the third phase late August and the final phase early September. In order to complete the works as quickly as possible, engineers will be working 7 days a week.
Phase 1: Works will begin on the 27 July and will last approximately one week. During this time a lane closure will be in place on Bainbridge Road to the junction of Cardigan Road.
Phase 2: Works will commence on 3 August and last approximately one week. During this time there will be a part road closure on Spring Road from the junction of Cardigan Road to outside number 17 Spring Road.
Phase 3: From 10 August works will continue to progress along Cardigan Road from the junction of Spring Road to Victoria Road for two weeks. Traffic flow will be managed with manually operated Stop/Go signs.
Phase 4: Works will begin on 24 August and will last approximately 2 weeks. The West bound lane, from the junction of Norwood Terrace to the junction of Cardigan Road will be closed while the work is carried out. Two-way traffic lights will be in place at the junction of Cardigan Road and Victoria Road in order to ensure the safe flow of traffic.
As Cardigan Road is a major bus route, delays are to be expected and advanced warning signs are in place to advise road users about the work and the lane closures. NGN has been liaising with all bus companies in the area to make them aware of the works and bus stops on the route will be suspended with alternative temporary bus stops put in place.
Pedestrian crossings may be affected, however an alternative footpath will be provided to ensure pedestrians can continue to cross the road safely.
