Northern Gas Networks is upgrading ageing metallic gas mains in Thinford Lane and Thinford Roundabout in Durham.
The project, which is due to commence on Saturday 19 July, is part of Northern Gas Network’s ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing the existing metallic gas main with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.
To minimise the level of disruption caused, the scheme which is expected to take six weeks to complete, has been planned to take place during the school holidays.
Shops and businesses will remain open as usual and will be clearly signposted. The layby opposite Thinford Lane Inn will remain closed throughout the duration of the work and used as a temporary car park for local businesses including Thinford Nurseries, Thinford Saddlery, Hand Car Wash and Robs Hot and Cold Foods.
In order to carry out our work safely and efficiently, it will be necessary to close a stretch of Thinford Lane (A688) leading up to Thinford Lane Roundabout. There will be no access for road traffic or pedestrians.
A diversion will be in place throughout the project and clearly signposted from Junction 61 of the A1(M) and the A688. Access to Ferryhill will be maintained via Metal Bridge.
All bus services will continue to operate as usual but people are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey as diversions may result in extended travel times.
The Scarlet Band Bus Company will run a shuttle bus service from Spennymoor to West Cornforth and Ferryhill throughout the duration of the project.
Gordon Thompson, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said: “We have worked closely with Durham County Council to plan this work so that it takes place during the quieter school holiday period.
“We know that no one likes roadworks and our engineers will be working seven day weeks in order to complete the work as quickly as possible.”
