Northern Gas Networks is investing £750,000 to upgrade the ageing gas distribution network in York city centre.

The major project is part of NGN’s ongoing development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing 1.2km of existing metal gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to our customers in York for years to come.

The nine month project will be carried out in seven phases to minimise city centre disruption, and is scheduled for completion in March 2014.

Northern Gas Networks engineers are making good progress, having already completed three phases of the project, replacing 500 metres of metal gas mains in The Stonebow, Aldwark and Lord Mayors Walk areas of York, ahead of schedule.

From Monday, 22nd July, engineers will be moving onto the next phase of the project, continuing their essential work in St Saviours Place and Peasholme Green.

Garry Farnhill, Customer Operations Area Manager, Northern Gas Networks said; “We’ve developed a phased plan for this project by working closely with City of York Council to minimise disruption to motorists, residents and local businesses.

“We’ll be keeping customers informed throughout by holding community forums at key stages of the work. Our first forum will be held Monday 22nd July providing an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions or raise any concerns.”

Garry added, “We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding, and apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. You can find more information about our work on our website and we will also sharing regular updates on Twitter and Facebook.

In the coming weeks Northern Gas Networks will be opening a customer cabin, located in the Parliament Street / Pavement area. Members of the public are invited to drop in to get the latest information about the work and representatives from Northern Gas Networks will be available to answer any questions that they may have. The cabin will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11.00am to 1.00pm and on Tuesday evenings from 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

As part of this major project engineers will also be working in the following York city centre locations over the coming months:
Summer 2013: St Saviours Place
Autumn / Winter 2013: High Ousegate, Pavement, Parliament Street, Coppergate, Piccadilly,
Winter 2014: Goodramgate, Monkgate Bar
Spring 2014: St Maurice’s Road

The Northern Gas Networks community forum will be held at The Black Swan Inn, 23 Peasholme Green, York, Y01 7PR from 17.30 – 19.00 on Monday 22nd July.
